Who's Powering Who these Days?
We last reported on this
in May 2002. Since that time, Google took over for Inktomi
and is now Powering AOL and IWON.
Google provides its' listings to: AOL, Yahoo, Netscape
Search, HotBot & Iwon and is the Search Provider for Earthlink.
In addition, as of October 2002 Google now provides the
primary search results for Yahoo. The Yahoo Directory is still
in existence although you must use their hierarchical system.
Inktomi provides its' listings to: Overture, HotBot &
MSN.
Fast provides its' listings to: All The Web, Lycos
& LookSmart.
Yahoo! announced in a Press Release dated 12/23/02 that
it will purchase Inktomi for $235 Million. So, will Yahoo
utilize Inktomi's data collection for its' result set? Experts
speculate that Yahoo will utilize a combined result set from
both Google and Intomi.

As of January 2003, both
Google and Inktomi are tying in
terms of size, both containing approximately 3+ Billion
webpages in their databases. These numbers have increased
as of August 2002. At that time Google had 2.4 billion webpages
in its' database and Inktomi's database contained 2+ billion
webpages. Fast lists 2.1 Billion webpages as of June 2002.
Their new numbers remain to be published.
With these numbers, is it even possible to get a decent listing?
