In a press release dated 12/23/02 Yahoo! announced that it will purchase the Crawler Based Search Engine Inktomi for approximately $235 million. Inktomi currently provides its' data to: Overture, HotBot, MSN, About & Looksmart and lists 3 Billion websites. Yahoo is still using Google's data as its' primary search results, which lists 3+ Billion webpages. Inktomi was founded in 1996, originating as an experimental search engine at U.C. Berkeley. Yahoo opened in 1994 and is the Internet's Oldest Directory.

Ultimately, it is anticipated that Yahoo will provide a combination of the Google and Inktomi databases "turning Yahoo! into a metasearch engine. However, Yahoo! may also decide to drop Google in favor of Inktomi" says Pandia Search World. As of October 2002, Yahoo switched to using Googles' data for their primary search results, their directory results being available via their categorical hierarchy.

It is critical that your site is crawled by Inktomi's spider to get a decent listing with Overture, HotBot, MSN, About & Looksmart and now most likely this will include Yahoo!
